One of the stalwarts of the Indian Electronic Music scene, Gaurav Raina is better known for his role as one-half of India’s biggest electronica pioneers, The Midival Punditz. Now, also known for his latest solo project, Grain, he’s helping re-define the electronic music scene in India.
GRAIN has been unleashing his new brand of music at live gigs and intimate listening sessions. The music is an exploration into lyrical songwriting, gritty textures and deeper sounds with a universal accent and his collabs include Karsh Kale, Anoushka Shankar, Monica Dogra, Ankur Tewari, Brooklyn Shanti, Talia Bentson, Sid Basrur and Kavya Trehan.
As a producer, Gaurav has earned varied experiences working with the likes of Anoushka Shankar, Karsh Kale, Dj Chebi Sabbah, Sting to name a few. As a performance artist, he has shared the stage with many international names such as Alicia Keys, Anoushka Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Bill Laswell, Norah Jones, Usher etc. He’s also composed background scores for Bollywood films including Dum Maro Dum, Karthik Calling Karthik, Don and Soundtrack and lent his music to Hollywood projects such as Closer (movie), 6 feet Under (HBO), Prison Break (Fox) & Monsoon Wedding (movie).
From being DJ’s in Delhi clubs to making their own music and releasing 4 studio albums, Midival Punditz began making electronica in the 90’s when it was just starting out in the West. Eventually leading to the conception of Indian Electronica, Midival’s journey has now come a full circle with both Tapan and Gaurav venturing out under individual monikers while still continuing to play together.
As a DJ, who plays cross-genre, experimental sets and explores new scenes and sounds, GRAIN’s music flows from Electronica to Indian Electronica and Drum n Bass to Dubstep. Born from Gaurav’s personal desire to write songs and vocal tracks, GRAIN’s tracks started out as musical experiments with Karsh Kale and then with Talia Bentson. The sound emerged into a dark lustrous scape of deep electronica moods, with some beautiful lyrical songs. His sound stretches the boundaries of what electronica is perceived to achieve and actually can do in reality.
